Although Summerville properties are the perfect year-round home now, interestingly enough, the town was conceived as a sort of seasonal vacation spot at first. In fact, its name actually comes from the literal combination of the words. Summerville is very rich in heritage, its history dating back three centuries. In the late 1700s, some Charlestonians and other nearby residents of the South Carolina Lowcountry desired refuge from the brutal summer heat, mosquitoes, and disease – and they found their refuge in what is today known as Summerville. During the summer months, they lived temporarily in the pine forests, grateful for the shelter they provided. The higher elevation also offered reprieve from the heat, and from May to September the plantation families from Charleston and the surrounding areas resided in their quaint forest retreat.
The arrival of the railroad in the early 1800s ushered Summerville into the modern age. To supply the wood needed for laying rails, and in order to keep commercial centers near the tracks, large amounts of Summerville’s beautiful trees began to be cut down. Officials realized that this was the main asset of the town, and knew that they had to be protected; so, in 1847, Summerville was officially recognized as a town and passed a law prohibiting the removal of trees of a certain size without permission. That law, one of the oldest of its kind in the United States, in still in effect in Summerville to this day.
